Capacitance Calculator - Calculate Charge, Energy & Capacitor Circuits

Capacitance is the ability of an object to store electric charge. A capacitor is an electronic component specifically designed to store electrical energy in the form of an electric field. The unit of capacitance is the Farad (F). The charge stored in a capacitor is calculated by Q = CV, where C is capacitance and V is voltage. The stored energy is E = ½CV². In a series circuit, the total capacitance is smaller, while in a parallel circuit, the total capacitance is the sum of all capacitors.

Q = CV; E = ½CV²; 1/C_series = Σ1/Ci; C_parallel = ΣCi

Examples

Capacitor Charge and Energy

Problem:

A 10 µF capacitor is charged to 100 V. Calculate stored charge and energy.

Solution:
  1. 1.Q = CV = 10×10⁻⁶ × 100 = 1×10⁻³ C = 1 mC
  2. 2.E = ½CV² = ½ × 10×10⁻⁶ × 100² = 0.05 J
Result:Q = 1 mC, E = 0.05 J

Charge is 1 milliCoulomb, energy stored is 0.05 Joule

Series Circuit

Problem:

Three capacitors 6 µF, 3 µF, and 2 µF are connected in series. Find total capacitance.

Solution:
  1. 1.1/C = 1/6 + 1/3 + 1/2 = 1/6 + 2/6 + 3/6 = 6/6 = 1
  2. 2.C = 1 µF
Result:1 µF

Total series capacitance is 1 µF

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a capacitor?
A capacitor is an electronic component that stores electrical energy in an electric field. It consists of two conductors separated by a dielectric (insulator) material.
Why is total capacitance smaller in series?
In series, the same charge must pass through all capacitors, effectively increasing plate separation distance, resulting in total capacitance smaller than the smallest individual capacitor.
What are capacitors used for?
Capacitors are used for: power supply filtering, temporary energy storage, signal coupling/decoupling, frequency tuning, and noise/spike suppression in electronic circuits.
