How to Calculate Floor Tiles
Calculate floor tile requirements based on room dimensions, tile size, grout width, and wastage percentage. Construction calculator for home renovation, interior design, and tiling projects. Supports ceramic, porcelain, marble, and granite tile calculations.
Tile Requirement Formula
Number of Boxes = (Area ÷ Area per Box) + Waste AllowanceFormula: Total Tiles = (Room Length × Room Width) / (Tile Length × Tile Width)Variables:
- AreaLength × Width of the roomLength × Width of the room(e.g.: 20 m²)
- Area per BoxCoverage area of one tile box (usually ~1 m²)Coverage area of one tile box (usually ~1 m²)(e.g.: 1.44 m² for 60x60)
- Waste AllowanceAdditional 5-10% for cuts and breakageAdditional 5-10% for cuts and breakage(e.g.: 1 box)
How to Use the Floor Tile Calculator
- 1
Measure the Room
Enter the length and width of the floor or wall where the tiles will be installed.
- 2
Select Tile Size
Enter the tile dimensions (e.g., 40x40, 60x60, 30x30).
- 3
Determine Buffer
It is recommended to add 10% to account for broken or cut tiles.
Examples
Living Room Floor
A 4x4 meter room using 40x40 cm tiles.
- 1.Area = 16 m²
- 2.40x40 tiles per box contain 6 pieces (0.96 m²)
- 3.Number of boxes = 16 ÷ 0.96 = 16.67 boxes
- 4.Round up + Buffer = 18 boxes
It is recommended to purchase 18 boxes of tiles to ensure sufficient material.
Example 2: Bathroom Renovation
Calculate the number of boxes required to tile a bathroom floor measuring 3.5 meters by 2.2 meters. Each box contains 1.2 m² of tiles, and a 10% waste allowance is required.
- 1.Step 1: Calculate the total floor area (3.5m * 2.2m = 7.7 m²).
- 2.Step 2: Calculate the waste allowance (7.7 m² * 0.10 = 0.77 m²).
- 3.Step 3: Add waste to total area (7.7 m² + 0.77 m² = 8.47 m²) and divide by area per box (8.47 m² / 1.2 m² = 7.058).
Since you cannot purchase partial boxes, you must round up to 8 boxes to ensure full coverage of the bathroom floor including the waste allowance.
